Description
Role Objective:
To lead and manage quality assurance activities and laboratory operations within the Oman Flour Mills Facility, ensuring the implementation of robust quality systems for flour and feed production. The role aims to drive excellence through technical expertise, effective team leadership, and alignment with international standards, translating quality performance into strategic business value for Atyab International Services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Quality Control & Assurance Activities
- Oversee and manage all quality control operations and activities across multiple flour milling sites as per Quality Manual and procedures.
- Ensure daily reporting and documentation as per quality plans report writing of QC analysis, product non-conformance, statistical reports, and product performance measurement to ensure conformance to quality, and to create data for further development work.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of the Integrated Management System (IMS) in the production line from purchase of raw materials to dispatch of finished feed as per various ISO standards like 9001, 22001, 14001, 45001 and 17025.
- Ensure adherence to local and international food safety and quality standards (e.g., ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, HACCP, IMS, Halal certificates).
- Respond to quality complaints within 24 hours, conduct investigations, root cause analysis, and make recommendations for corrective and preventive actions in coordination with all relevant departments.
- Develop and implement robust QC protocols and SOPs tailored for flour and Feed milling environments.
- Monitor production processes to ensure consistent product quality and address non-conformities promptly.
- Evaluate and optimize sampling and Inspection methods, analysis procedures, and test validations.
- Assist in research and development (R&D) projects related to new products or improvement of existing products, while support experimental trials, method development, and pilot batch analysis.
- Research, recommend, and implement new QC technologies, including digital tools, NIR analyzers, AI-based inspection systems, and automation.
- Stay current with international trends in flour milling QC and integrate best-in-class practices into operations.
Laboratory & Inventory Management
- Supervise laboratory staff and ensure accurate testing of raw materials, in-process samples, and final products.
- Manage procurement and maintenance of lab equipment, including calibration and troubleshooting.
- Interpret lab results and provide actionable insights to the operations and production teams.
- Ensure lab documentation is complete, traceable, and audit ready.
- Oversee the calibration, maintenance, and servicing schedules for laboratory equipment.
- Monitor and maintain inventory levels of chemicals, consumables, and laboratory supplies to ensure smooth operations.
- Ensure that lab information and data are securely stored and accessible only to authorized personnel.
Reporting Responsibilities
- Prepare and submit weekly and monthly reports on QC performance, laboratory activities, non-conformities, and corrective actions to the AIS CEO.
- Provide data-driven insights and trend analyses to support strategic decision-making.
- Maintain and present dashboards for key quality KPIs including customer complaints, test result accuracy, equipment uptime, and compliance scores.
- Coordinate quarterly review meetings with senior management to evaluate QC project milestones and lab performance metrics.
- Ensure regulatory and compliance reports (e.g., ISO audits, Halal certification, food safety audits) are compiled, verified, and submitted on time.
- Support cross-functional teams by providing timely quality and lab performance data needed for production planning, commercial negotiations, and customer audits.
- Escalate critical quality incidents or risks to the AIS CEO immediately with root cause analysis and mitigation plans.
- Monitor and report on project progress, resource utilization, and budget status for all QC-related initiatives.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance
- Follow all laboratory safety procedures, ensuring safe handling of chemicals and biological materials.
- Promote adherence to occupational health and safety regulations and environmental standards.
People & Project Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop cross-functional QC teams and laboratory technicians.
- Facilitate training programs for plant staff on quality, hygiene, and safety practices.
- Collaborate with supply chain, production, and commercial teams to align QC activities with business goals.
Commercial & Business Aspects
- Align quality strategy with broader business objectives to drive customer satisfaction and profitability.
- Evaluate QC operations and recommend cost- efficient improvements.
- Support commercial teams in responding to customer quality queries, audits, and specification development.
- Engage with clients, regulatory bodies, and international partners to uphold brand integrity and global compliance.
Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s in food science, cereals and grain science, animal nutrition, fisheries sciences, feed manufacturing technology, or a closely related field.
- Masters Degree in MBA or related field is an added advantage.
Experience: (Years and nature of experience)
- Minimum 7-10 years of experience in Quality Control within the flour milling industry, with at least 3 years in a similar managerial role.
- Demonstrated experience in managing lab operations and supervising technical teams.
- Proven track record of integrating quality systems with commercial goals.
- Experience in international markets or multinational environments is highly preferred.
- Strong background in laboratory operations and supervising multi-disciplinary teams.
- Strong leadership, training, and change management capabilities.
- Practical experience in setting up or maintaining Integrated Management Systems (IMS).
- In-depth knowledge of ISO standards, HACCP, FSSC 22000, and GMP+ or equivalent feed safety schemes.
- Proven ability to align technical quality programs with commercial strategy and client satisfaction.
- Experience with Halal certification requirements from authorities such as GSO, or other globally recognized bodies – preferred.
- Familiarity with milling equipment (Bühler, Ocrim, etc.), quality control tools, and analytics systems.
- Experience in handling and commissioning food safety and food security projects
Skills & Knowledge
Technical Skills:
- In-depth knowledge on international flour and feed milling processes and wheat quality control Requirements.
- Proficient in analytical methods for flour and grain quality (e.g., Falling Number, Ash Content, Gluten, Moisture, etc.).
- Exposure to customer, audits, export market quality demands, and product development.
- Thorough knowledge on IMS and GLP International practices
