Muslim Advocates is a national civil rights legal organization dedicated to serving Muslim communities and other historically marginalized populations through litigation, policy advocacy, and direct legal services.
**About the Role**
This is a full-time, union-represented position reporting to the Legal Director. You will lead and contribute across multiple core practice areas while managing complex legal matters from initial intake through settlement and policy impact.
**Key Responsibilities**
- **Case Development & Client Services**: Identify and evaluate cases, communicate directly with clients, screen incoming intake requests, and build long-term client relationships
- **Litigation**: Draft pleadings, develop discovery strategies, conduct complex legal research and writing, negotiate settlements, and represent clients in federal, state, and local courts
- **Policy & Advocacy**: Engage in federal, state, and local policy advocacy; conduct public oral advocacy and media engagement; develop and present Know Your Rights training materials and educational content for advocates
- **Organizational Support**: Provide technical legal assistance to grassroots partner organizations; supervise interns and fellows
- **Subject-Matter Focus**: Demonstrate deep expertise in at least one area: immigration detention and deportation systems, First Amendment and Title VI student rights, criminal legal systems, prisoners' rights and carceral abolition, national security law, or low-wage workers' rights
**Required Qualifications**
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Active bar admission in any U.S. state or Washington, D.C.
- Minimum 7 years of attorney practice experience
- Fluency in English
- Subject-matter expertise in at least one focus area listed above
- Strong judgment, communication, organizational, and remote-collaboration skills
**Preferred Qualifications**
- Federal and state court litigation experience
- Complex civil litigation background
- Administrative complaint experience
- Language proficiency in Arabic, Urdu, Dari, Farsi, Pashto, Tajik, Uzbek, ASL, or ISL
- Experience with trauma-informed practice and cultural humility
**Compensation & Benefits**
Salary range: $110,000–$130,000 annually, based on experience. Comprehensive benefits package included. Union-represented position with full remote work option.
**Work Arrangement**
Fully remote within the United States, with most staff based on the East Coast. Periodic domestic travel required for staff gatherings, court appearances, and professional engagements. Rolling applications.
